"When Your Ears Ring" explains what causes tinnitus and the options available to you that can help you bring your tinnitus under control.
When Your Ears Ring! 6th Edition Cope with Your TinnitusHere How Neil G Bauman 9781935939184 Books
Be sure to get the latest, 2013, 6th Edition - I noticed that earlier editions are still being sold on Amazon. This book offers an array of natural remedies for tinnitus. The only way to know if something will work is to try it. There appears to be no known cure for tinnitus, so this book at least offers some hope.
If you are taking any meds - prescription or OTC - then your tinnitus or hearing loss might be the result of these. Even NSAIDs such as aspirin and ibuprofen can cause tinnitus. Tinnitus can be simply mildly disruptive, to horribly insidious, and conventional medicine has no cure (in fact they are most often the CAUSE of it). According to the author the sooner you address the problem the higher your chances are for recovery.
My own personal experience with tinnitus is that I have been sensitive to aspirin for 3 decades after I took too many for a toothache when I was young and poor. I could still take an occasional aspirin and, if it caused tinnitus, which was usually very mild, the tinnitus would stop within a day after I stopped the aspirin. I only took an aspirin for extreme circumstances. If I'd had Neil Bouman's books I would have known that substituting acetaminophen (Tylenol) would have been safer than aspirin since it is not ototoxic.
Unfortunately, after years of borderline high blood pressure that had been controlled with natural remedies, the unexpected illness and subsequent death of my mother caused it to go out of control so relented and took and ACE Inhibitor, 2-3 times per week. After several months I switched to an ARB due to coughing caused by the ACE. Less than 2 months after taking the ARB, about twice per week, my tinnitus began. I tried switching back to the ACE inhibitor but the tinnitus grew worse. I immediately stopped all medication, but it was too late. I took the meds for about 6 weeks in all while experiencing tinnitus. Six months later and I still suffer from tinnitus that continues to grow worse -- it is now a mind-bending, high-pitched ringing. Sometimes it's so loud it wakes me up and keeps me awake throughout the night.
I came across Neil Bauman's website and ordered his books. I was amazed at how many things can cause tinnitus. For instance, if you are taking ibuprophen or any NSAID, prescription pain meds, certain antibiotics, antidepressants, and the list goes on and on, any of these can cause a variety of detrimental changes in the cochlea in the inner ear leading to hearing loss and/or tinnitus. In addition, while taking many of these medications your inner ear become especially sensitive to loud noises which can cause further permanent damage. (The last bit I learned after watching Dr. Oz.) But no one tells you any of this!
My tinnitus continues to grow worse even though I have removed the offending medication and I have made changes to my diet. The author lists foods that can be the culprit as well. My next course of action is to try an extended vegetable juice fast (60-90 days). This is not mentioned in his book, but I have been aware of the benefits of fasting for 30 years. Some folks have experienced the restoration of hearing loss after a 40 day water fast or a more extended juice fast, so I don't see why this couldn't help tinnitus. I don't recommend a water-only fast for long durations like this, but for most people an extended vegetable juice fast is safe. (Check with your doctor if in doubt - or if you have diabetes or any form of kidney disease/failure.)
I recommend another hefty book by Bauman, 'Ototoxic Drugs Exposed' (3rd Edition)

This book is more expensive than the book reviewed here (about $52 vs $23) but it's quite large and full of helpful information which might help you get to the root cause of your problem if it's medicine-related. This could increase your likelihood of eliminating your tinnitus before it becomes permanent. The book includes comparable drugs that do not have ototoxic side effects.
Although this last book is a bit more difficult to read for the layperson than the book reviewed here, it contains information that will allow you to have a discussion with your doctor regarding your meds. Most MD's know little if anything regarding the connection between tinnitus and prescription or OTC medicine.
I've also noticed that Neil Bauman responds to questions asked on his website. (If you're interested, please google his name along with the key word, tinnitus, because Amazon will remove any outside link I try to insert here.)
I will report back when I experience a change in my tinnitus. As a nutritionist and a researcher, I would greatly appreciate any feedback you have experienced related to tinnitus. Please post in the comments section which I will monitor. Your experiences could also be helpful to others battling tinnitus.
Please consider clicking 'Yes' for helpful if this review has indeed been helpful.
